Summer of Love Gala & Art Auction and Presentation of the MUSE Awards

Cape Cod Museum of Art (CCMoA) will be revisiting the feel of the 60s at the Museum’s major annual fundraising event this year on Saturday, August 19, 5 – 10 p.m. The Summer of Love theme marks the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Summer of Love that ushered in a hippie movement throughout the country. The Volkswagen bus that became a symbol of the ‘on the road’ impulses of the era will be on the grounds, compliments of Tracey Volkswagen of Hyannis, which is also celebrating their 50th anniversary. During this festive evening, CCMoA will be auctioning diverse art from the fine artists of the Cape Cod community, as well as fun and special items, including adventure trips, unique experiences, and cultural “packages” to raise money for the Museum’s educational programs, including the Art & Alzheimer’s Program.

“We are thrilled to present the CCMoA MUSE Awards to honor individuals for their significant contributions to the Museum and to the larger art community,” says Edith (Deede) Tonelli. “This very special award is a beautiful woven-glass bowl created by artist Benton Jones, as a metaphor for individuals who are woven into the fabric of our community.” The 2017 MUSE Benefactor Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Cape Cod & Islands Art Community goes to Roger Ludwig. The 2017 MUSE Artist Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Cape Cod & Islands Art Community goes to Provincetown’s own Salvatore Del Deo.

Roger Ludwig is a philanthropist whose exceptional commitment to improving the Cape Cod community has had a lasting impact on the Cape’s education and health care. In 2006, Ludwig established the Diabetes Education Center in West Dennis, which has been providing exceptional counseling service ever since. Additionally, Ludwig created a scholarship fund for Cape Cod high school graduates with type 1 diabetes. In 2007, Ludwig was named the Outstanding Philanthropist of the Year by Philanthropy Day. Ludwig has been a trustee of the Frank X. and Mary E. Weny Charitable Trust, which helped establish the Frank X. and Mary E. Weny Education Center at CCMoA and provides support to many local nonprofits, including the Harwich Junior Theater, Thornton Burgess Society, The Cape Cod Foundation, YMCA, and Cape Cod Hospital.

For over 60 years, painter Salvatore Del Deo has been an integral part of the Provincetown art community. A student of Henry Hensche’s, Del Deo’s work captures familiar landscapes with a rich color palette. In a style that ranges from the realistic to the abstract, Del Deo has captured all the familiar scenes of his life at land’s end – fish, dunes, figures on the back beach, boats moored at the town wharf, trap sheds, and lighthouses. The artist is known for his outstanding hospitality, homemade wine, and extraordinary community involvement. His work has been on exhibition in many local galleries, as well as in the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, Harvard University, Williams College Museum of Art, and others. A solo exhibition of his work, Salvatore Del Deo: A Storied History, will be presented at CCMoA from August 24 – October 22, with a public reception on Thursday, August 31, 5:30 – 7 p.m.

Cape Cod Museum of Art (CCMoA) is located at 60 Hope Lane, just off Route 6A, on the same campus as the Cape Cinema and the Cape Cod Playhouse in Dennis, MA. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 12 – 5 p.m. on Sunday. It is open on Thursdays from 5 – 8 p.m. with no admission fee. Shabbat in Ptown

Central Reform Temple of Boston, a progressive Jewish congregation located at 15 Newbury Street in the Back Bay Boston, will offer the last in its series of summer Sabbath Eve worship services in Provincetown, on Friday evening, August 11 at 5:30 p.m. These inclusive, egalitarian celebrations in prayer and song, are led by Rabbi Howard Berman and the congregation’s musicians, with guest accompanist John Thomas, and they are held at the Unitarian Universalist Meeting House, 236 Commercial Street, followed by an Oneg Shabbat social hour on the front lawn.

Central Reform Temple is the liberal Jewish presence in the center of Boston, and is active in the interfaith community and in the broader civic and social life of the city. With many members who are also residents of Provincetown, it has offered various programs here on the Outer Cape over the years, highlighted by these special monthly worship celebrations each summer.

People of all faiths and spiritual practice are warmly invited and welcome to participate. For further information, call 617.262.1202 or visit centralreformtemple.org.
