“There’s something here for everyone, with especially strong fiction, poetry, LGBTQ, and local sections.”
Anyone who opens a shop in Provincetown during New Year’s week is both driven and optimistic, and that definitely applies to Jeff Peters of East End Books, a general-interest bookshop offering a lovingly curated selection within each genre. There’s something here for everyone, with especially strong fiction, poetry, LGBTQ, and local sections. It’s a lively place, with monthly author readings and other events, all of which are available in real-time via a livestream and later online, so if you can’t come in, you don’t have to miss out! But it’s also what Peters calls an “oasis of peace,” with its creaking wood floors, its water view, its comfy chairs and coffee, so visitors can leave the heat and bustle of Commercial Street and enter an atmosphere of calm and creativity. “I’m passionate about books,” says Peters, who works hard to support community projects and events, as well. “It’s a place of discovery,” introducing readers to new voices or helping them find just the right book for any moment—beach, travel, lounging in a hammock. And if you can’t come in, or you want to revisit once you’re home, anything can be ordered off the website, giving you a year-round opportunity to support a local independent bookseller.
