When husbands Brian Orter and Michael DiMartino came to Provincetown from Los Angeles, they were at first looking for a studio space for DiMartino. The artist works in numerous media but also taught himself to sew years ago when he was doing music videos as a performer and needed costumes. But over time, he found sewing to be a therapeutic, fun outlet that allows him to create artwork that is also functional. When a space became available this past winter in Whaler’s Wharf mall on Commercial Street, they decided to use it as a kind of hybrid retail/open studio space where Michael could create his unique pillows, most of which feature designs from paintings he’s done. Top sellers include those specific to Provincetown, with images of Portuguese roosters, nautical symbols, or especially naughty designs, such as one featuring a unique banana! And then there are the 100% Italian leather pillows, which feature harnesses in black or red designs. The pillows come in a wide range of sizes, designs, and prices. For DiMartino it’s just about creating things that people enjoy. Stop in and take a peek or check it out online.
