“…the goal is the same as it was when they opened their doors: a place and taste that’s approachable and unintimidating, so wine lovers and novices alike can come enjoy the experience, taste the wines, and learn about the process.”
There was a time when no one associated Cape Cod with wineries, but several regional maritime vineyards have proven that assumption a fallacy. In particular, Truro Vineyards in North Truro, just off Route 6, will convince any skeptic wine-making is alive, well, and evolving here. And it’s doing it in a way that completely involves the public. From April through December, visitors can taste wine and rum under the new pavilion, do a winery and distillery tour, or just enjoy the property with a glass of wine or a rum cocktail and lunch from the food truck. Every year the vineyard produces 11,000 cases of wine and 2,000 cases of rum, but despite the numbers, the goal is the same as it was when they opened their doors: a place and taste that’s approachable and unintimidating, so wine lovers and novices alike can come enjoy the experience, taste the wines, and learn about the process. Chardonnay, Cabernet France, and Merlot are grown in the vineyard’s 4.5 acres, with additional grapes imported from New York and California for greater variety.
The Roberts family knew nothing about the wine business when they purchased the Truro Vineyards in 2007; in 2014 the family added a rum they call Twenty Boat—from the wonderful story of a rumrunner who eluded 20 police boats to escape with his haul in Provincetown during Prohibition. Twenty Boat Rum and Twenty Boat Amber Rum are both made from organic molasses and cane sugar juice distilled in a 250 gallon copper pot still. Everything the vineyard does is locally sourced: the spiced version of Twenty Boat comes from the Atlantic Spice Company, just up Shore Road from the winery. Special events, concerts, weddings, and more can be arranged at the vineyard, which is a truly magical place to spend an afternoon or an evening… so why not do it soon?
