The 70-seat Waters Edge Cinema, located at Whaler’s Wharf on Commercial Street, not only provides year-round entertainment but also encourages and supports local and student filmmakers, offers mini-film festivals, and presents first-run independent and art house films. The original Provincetown Cinema was built here in the early 1900s. The Whaler’s Wharf complex burned down in 1998, but the cinema was rebuilt over the next two years, and the current cinema has been operating since then, first under private ownership as the Whaler’s Wharf Cinema and renamed in 2013 when it was purchased by the Provincetown International Film Festival. The cinema’s aim is to offer the community a mix of mainstream and independent films that span a variety of genres and subject matter. A second multipurpose screening room offers first-run animation, documentary, foreign language, and short films, as well as a gallery for emerging video artists. Free screenings are offered to film society members, and the cinema presents special film screenings in conjunction with local groups (such as the ASGCC and the Provincetown Schooner Regatta), as well as accommodating independent filmmakers looking to screen their work. The staff is knowledgeable about both films and the community.
