Darlene Love Returns to Cape Cod
The Payomet Performing Arts Center in association with the Cotuit Center for the Arts is bringing one the giants of rock and roll back to the Cape with Darlene Love performing two shows at the Tilden Arts Center on the campus of Cape Cod Community College in West Barnstable, Saturday, November 11 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, November 12 at 3 p.m. Featured in the Academy Award-winning documentary 20 Feet From Stardom Love’s powerhouse vocals appears in hundreds of our culture’s most beloved and popular songs having worked with everyone from Sam Cooke, Dionne Warwick, the Beach Boys, Elvis Presley, Tom Jones, and Sonny and Cher. She sang back up on such classic songs as “Be My Baby” by the Ronettes, Johnny River’s “Baby I Need Your Loving”, and even “The Monster Mash” with Bobby “Boris” Pickett. However, she also is known for providing the lead vocals on the hit song “He’s a Rebel” and in particular for several tracks on A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector, the classic 1963 holiday album featuring Love’s version of “White Christmas”, “Marshmallow World”, “Winter Wonderland” and her signature song “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).” The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee is a favorite whenever she performs on Cape Cod having blown the roof off of the Wellfleet Congregational Church and the tent at Payomet in North Truro at past concerts. Pride Flag Flies on Federal Land in Historic First
The Rainbow Flag, the international symbol of LGBT pride, is flying over National Park Service land for the first time after a ceremony at the Stonewall National Monument in New York this month. The site of the riots that kicked off the modern LGBT rights movement on June 28, 1969, President Barack Obama officially designated he location as a national monument in June 2016. The 7.7-acre monument is located in Greenwich Village and includes Christopher Park and the block of Christopher Street bordering the park directly across from the Stonewall Inn. Designed in 1979 by Gilbert Baker, who died in March, the rainbow flag will fly permanently over the National Park Service site. For more on the Stonewall National Monument visit nps.gov/ston.
