COVID SPURS NEW TRAFFIC-FLOW SYSTEM FOR SOUP KITCHEN

Soup Kitchen in Provincetown Press Release – October 22,2020

PROVINCETOWN, MA—Restrictions prompted by the ongoing pandemic have led to a new traffic-flow system for the Soup Kitchen In Provincetown (SKIP). When its 28th season begins on Monday, November 2, SKIP will distribute its boxed lunches from the police-department side of its location, the Provincetown United Methodist Church (PUMC) on Shank Painter Road.

The new location for lunch distribution will require guests to enter the PUMC parking lot and drive around the building to the side parallel to the police station (see chart here or at www.skipfood.org). Guests wearing masks are asked to pop open their car trunks or lower their rear windows for SKIP volunteers to deposit the lunches. During SKIP’s opening week, volunteers will assist in transitioning to the new traffic flow by directing guests.

“Working with the PUMC, the SKIP board has devised this new traffic system to help ensure the utmost safety of our guests and volunteers,” said SKIP Chair Philip Franchini. “While we’re unable to offer indoor dining, this system will allow us to continue our vital meal service to the community.”

Volunteers will continue to accommodate those who arrive for lunch on foot or bicycles.

Open to all, the soup kitchen operates weekdays from November through April, 12:30pm to 1:30pm. In its 2019-2020 season, SKIP operated for an additional five weeks and served more than 15,000 meals. That number is expected to rise in the upcoming season due to unemployment and other pandemic-related hardships, and SKIP anticipates the need for greater funding. It will continue its Sponsor a Lunch program (SLP), whereby individuals, businesses and organizations may underwrite a day’s meals and Friday’s “to-go” meals for $250. Donations of any amount are welcome and may be made online at www.skipfood.org or mailed to SKIP, P.O. Box 538, Provincetown, MA 02657.

“SLP and other donations—all tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law—bring SKIP much-needed funding for the hearty meals prepared daily by our dedicated volunteers,” said Franchini, “These loyal women and men make this remarkable community resource possible.”
