FAWC Announces Summer 2021 Virtual Workshops, Programs, and Reading Series

The Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown (FAWC) is excited to announce its new Summer 2021 programming lineup. In addition to our stellar series of virtual writing and visual arts workshops led by our renowned and beloved faculty, the Work Center is also offering a limited number of special residency opportunities and the launch of its new 24PearlStreet faculty reading series.

In response to COVID-19, the Work Center has pivoted this summer’s live, “on campus” workshop programming to an online platform. Historically the summer programming includes nearly 100 open-enrollment, week-long workshops across a broad array of disciplines – including poetry, fiction, memoir, playwriting, songwriting, painting, drawing, photography, and printmaking. The Work Center is thrilled that we are able to offer so many of these workshops online this summer – making them accessible to everyone, no matter where they live. These twelve weeks of visual arts and writing workshops are open to students across the globe from June through August 2021. The week-long, intensive courses are taught via Zoom as well as an online classroom, and are open to all, regardless of experience, on a first-come first-served basis.

Visual Arts offerings for Summer 2021 include week-long drawing courses led by Fred Liang and Linda Bond as well as a drawing and writing hybrid course taught by Mark Adams; painting, including abstract with Megan Hinton, portraiture with James Everett Stanley, and through a memoir lens with Pete Hocking; printmaking courses with Vicky Tomayko and Daniel Heyman; a collage course instructed by Bert Yarborough; sculpture with Kate Clark, and photography, including photographic portraiture courses with Jess Dugan and Beowulf Sheehan, self-portraiture with Richard Renaldi, a writing/photography hybrid course led by Joanne Dugan, and photography as storytelling device with David Hilliard.

Summer Writing Workshops feature week-long virtual classes as well as longer asynchronous virtual workshops, taught by acclaimed faculty in poetry, memoir, short story, novel, playwriting, multi-genre/hybrid, and graphic memoir. Faculty include Elissa Altman, Sandra Beasley, Erin Belieu, Jonatha Brooke, Gabrielle Calvocoressi, Peter Campion, Tina Chang, Michael Collier, Mark Conway, Kristina Marie Darling, Andre Dubus III, Nick Flynn, Nicole J. Georges, Kimiko Hahn, Marcie Hershman, Pam Houston, Marie Howe, Major Jackson, Yi Shun Lai, Reif Larsen, Ada Limón, Paul Lisicky, Fred Marchant, Sabrina Orah Mark, Gail Mazur, Campbell McGrath, John Murillo, Eileen Myles, Porsha Olayiwola, Matthew Olzmann, Nancy Pearson, Victoria Redel, Martha Rhodes, Sarah Schulman, Nicole Sealey, and Marion Winik.

This summer, the Work Center is also offering a very limited number of specialized residency opportunities. The new Michael Mazur Print Studio Residency Program is open only to experienced printmakers as no instruction will be offered. Resident printmakers will have 24/7 access to the Work Center’s state-of-the-art print studio during these one-week residencies. The Work Center is also pleased to announce its Summer Projects Residency Program running June 21 through August 29. These two-week residencies are open only to those who have previously participated as a Work Center 7-month Fellow, a Summer Program student or faculty, or as a recipient of another Work Center short-term residency. Potential residents are required to submit a one- to two-paragraph description of the writing or visual arts project they will work on while in residency. With the launch of its new seasonal reading series, “Wilder Words,” the Fine Arts Work Center’s online writing program, 24PearlStreet, celebrates new and recent books by its award-winning faculty. The spring 2021 program includes short readings of new poetry, fiction, and memoir by Kim Addonizio, Elissa Altman, Nickole Brown, Peter Campion, Tyler Mills, and Jennifer Jean (24PearlStreet’s Program Manager).

This spring event is scheduled for June 3, 6 – 7:30 p.m. EST. It is free and open to all but space is limited, so please register online.
