A Woman Named Carlös is on a quest to become a classic. In her one woman show, The New Classic, performed at the Post Office Cafe and Cabaret, Carlös embarks on an hour-long journey that transforms her into a star. However, I suspect that even without the instructions she is assigned via divine intervention, Carlös would still be a star. It may be Carlös’ second summer here in Provincetown, but she showcases a level of skill on par with some of Provincetown’s seasoned veterans. During the show, Carlös is assigned four performance tasks to complete in order to become a classic: a celebrity impression, something for the straights, something for the gays, and something truly classic. Carlös delivers on all fronts.
The New Classic has something for everyone in Provincetown. Live singing of songs like “Mr. Brightside,” “Don’t Stop Believing,” and “Sweet Caroline,” as well as celebrity impressions of Cher, Liza Minnelli, Marilyn Monroe, and Chita Rivera all in the same show. The tracklist spans multiple decades and genres, ensuring audience members of all ages and orientations can and will enjoy the show.
Draped in sequins, feathers, and her finest gold lamé, A Woman Named Carlös is a vision of old Hollywood glamour. The costumes in Carlös’ show are nothing short of stunning. When she inevitably is face to face with her audience members, they will notice her makeup is impossibly smooth and even. Look up slightly, and you will notice her wig has not a hair out of place, and it stays that way despite her lively dance performances. Even after singing and dancing for an hour straight, she looks like a doll fresh out of the box.
Carlös’ show has all the features of a classic drag show: live singing, dancing, crowd work, audience participation, punchy humor, props, and multiple outfit changes. Audiences should prepare for minimal but guaranteed crowd work and participation. If this is outside of your comfort zone don’t worry, Carlös’ quick wit won’t linger on you too long unless you want it to. Also, no one can draw their attention away from her to perceive you.
The New Classic is exactly as advertised: a new and fresh show concept, and certainly classic. Equipped with all the talents that garner an audience and the sense of humor that keeps them watching, Carlös never needed instructions on how to become a classic.
