Provincetown Carnival marks its 40th anniversary this year! What began in 1978 as a way to wake up a sleepy week in August has grown into one of the biggest events in New England, attracting 90,000 revelers to Provincetown each year. The town’s signature event that celebrates Provincetown’s LGBTQ community, culture, and diversity was founded by the Provincetown Business Guild (PBG), which stills works to promote the town to the LGBTQ community. The PBG produces this week-long event full of outrageous costumes, wild parties and shows, and of course the annual Carnival Parade down Commercial Street.
One of Carnival’s most longstanding traditions is the creation of a special poster for the event. The PBG is presenting an exhibition of Carnival posters over the years on display now through October at The Shack, the Guild’s new LGBTQ Welcome and Resource Center located across from Town Hall on the Ryder Street side.
Come relive some of your favorite Provincetown Carnival memories as the Guild honors 40 years of Carnival!
The Shack, the Provincetown Business Guild’s LGBTQ Welcome and Resource Center, is located at 115 Bradford St. and is open Fridays 7 – 9 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays 1 – 4 p.m. For more information call 508.487.2313 or visit ptown.org.
