“Womencrafts is one of the oldest shops in Provincetown—and one of few remaining feminist bookstores in the U.S.—showcasing over 100 female artists and 1,000 books.”
Lesbian owned and operated since 1976, Womencrafts is one of the oldest shops in Provincetown—and one of few remaining feminist bookstores in the U.S.—showcasing over 100 female artists and 1,000 books. Owner Michelle Axelson notes a change over the past year of “more political purchases: pins, bumper stickers, feminist artwork,” she says. “People are searching for information, people who never felt called to activism before.” Womencrafts continues its tradition of carrying local photographers, feminist jewelry, pottery, and gift items, as well as its staple lesbian fiction, though the book area has grown. “We have more trans and family books now,” Axelson says. A pop-up area features a different artist every month, and the vibe is friendly. Biggest seller this summer? A t-shirt that proclaims, “The Future is Female.”
