It started in the kitchen: Matt Belson and his wife received a home-brewing kit as a wedding present, and Belson enlisted his friend Mike Segerson to help him brew that first batch—and a passion was born. Devil’s Purse Brewing Company opened in May of 2015, and the two friends continue to talk, brew, drink, and think about beer together. “We brew beers that we love to drink,” says Belson, “and we produce beers that can satisfy a range of tastes, from diehard IPA lovers to folks who enjoy beers that are more nuanced and easy drinking.” The company is firmly rooted in Cape Cod: “Many of the names for our beers have local and nautical references,” says Belson. “For example, our IPAs tend to be named after old lightships. Others are named after local reefs and areas of shoaling. Surfman’s Check ESB is named after the metal badges issued to surfmen in the old U.S. Lifesaving Service, and Handline Kolsch refers to a simple technique for fishing.” Belson and Segerson are passionate about every aspect of brewing, from the logo to the ingredients, and are committed to bringing Cape Cod and the world the finest in craft brewing. Devil’s Purse is open for tours in the fall, and for purchasing and beer tastings year-round.
