“What I really enjoy,” says Powell, “is the challenge of making a one-of-a-kind bag for my shop or a customer. Using exotic hides like alligator and ostrich add another interest to my work.”

Victor Powell started working in leather in 1967 in Florida before coming to Provincetown where he created a line of handmade bags in a workshop above the Old Colony Tap. Now located in a quirky place on Commercial Street with slanting floors and a funky décor, the Victor Powell Workshop continues to create handmade custom leather items, including cobbled sandals and hand-stitched bags. “What I really enjoy,” says Powell, “is the challenge of making a one-of-a-kind bag for my shop or a customer. Using exotic hides like alligator and ostrich add another interest to my work.” A number of people enjoy designing their own briefcases and other bags, and the results the workshop creates are unique. There’s an expectation that many people have when they come to Provincetown to see artisans at work, and this is one place where an old tradition can be observed and appreciated as it carries on.
